COVER STORY
Ronan Bouroullec
Designer/Artist
What made his name known was perhaps the various furniture items he released in the early 2000s from top global brands such as Cappellini, Magis and Vitra. Bouroullec's activity is characterized by broad-ranging projects from small daily products to projects in public space, and his continual involvement in experimental works. Having led the design world for many years, Ronan is separating the studio he has been sharing with his brother Erwan Bouroullec to concentrate on his solo activities from here on. We interviewed Ronan who is also pouring effort into such artistic activities as ceramic art and drawings with felt pens for each line.
Feature1
Design Expanded by Technology
In 2021, the European Commission proposed Industry 5.0 as a concept representing a new industrial revolution. Building on Industry 4.0, in which technologies like AI and IoT developed dramatically, Industry 5.0 introduces a movement toward a more human-centric and sustainable industry. We are in an era where the question is no longer about the technology itself, but rather how it is used--each and every decision can cause a radical change in industry and society at large. The same could be said for design. That technology expands the scope of design is a given, but the question is what remains constant in this extended version of design, and how it can be used. This feature looks at various case studies that help us explore the true value of crossing design with technology.
How the Apple Vision Pro expands the designer's work
When we think of futuristic technologies available as of 2024, generative AI and the Apple Vision Pro are among the first to come to mind. With a price tag of 600,000 yen, the Apple Vision Pro stands as one of the most expensive AR/VR headsets on the market. But its cutting-edge technology, high quality, and immersive experience justify the cost. It's impressive how Apple has also laid out Human Interface Guidelines, which provide app developers with key insights into the user experience and best design practices to establish a new style of digital work called spatial computing.
Craftolution: Fusion of 3D printing and craftsmanship
A haute couture, which Divas like Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, and Björk love, might not sound our type of design. However, Dutch designer Iris van Herpen has been crafting new forms of fashion based on the concept of "craftolution," which combines technology, such as 3D -printing, with traditional craftsmanship.
A new standard for digital devices shaped by the warmth of technology
As the designs of smartphones and wireless earbuds increasingly start to look alike, almost as if they've undergone convergent evolution, the differences between digital devices now often come down to features and specs. Amid this trend, London-based digital product brand Nothing is producing products that are both cutting-edge and surprisingly approachable. We took a closer look at the company's unique philosophy, which focuses on redefining the relationship between users and devices.
DIGRAPH: Pursuing the future of visual expression
DIGRAPH is a creative studio established in 2023 by designer and graphic researcher (visual expression researcher) Hiromasa Fukaji, together with programmer and algorithmic designer Junichiro Horikawa. Exploring the extensive uses of digital technology, they challenge the possibilities of graphic expression while traversing various fields. What is it that they are striving for?

Conversation: Kengo Kuma × Rei Inamoto
How will the rapid advancements in technology influence architecture and design? Architect Kengo Kuma, who has approximately 400 projects in progress across 50 countries, and New York-based creative director Rei Inamoto, renowned for his work in global corporate branding, discuss the future of design and technology.
A balanced relationship with technology brings well-being to the city Urban visions emerging from SXSW--a showcase of the future
Technological development stimulates urban growth, enhancing the happiness of the inhabitants who carry out their lives there. Since the start of civilization, as people began to cluster and live together, urban development and technological innovation have been tightly intertwined. Yet, in recent years, there have been cases where the latest technology that should have brought joy resulted in a loss of urban livability and vitality. What have we missed? We contemplate this with the futurist of VISIONGRAPH Inc. and SXSW (South by Southwest) Japan, Maiko Miyagawa.
Feature 2
The function and value of outdoor design
Outdoor activities suddenly became popular due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now that the boom has settled, designs for outdoor living are not just a passing fad but something that has taken root in our daily living. Clothing that can withstand harsh environments has been developed as daily wear, lines of furniture that are resistant to wind and rain and can be used outside, and highly functional tools are becoming daily necessities. The disappearance of the border between inside and outside, cities and nature, may be a sign that we are recognizing the value of owning only the minimum necessary items by reevaluating the essential functions of things honed in nature. Now that we are required to give consideration to the environment in light of climate change, we focus on outdoor design that always faces nature.
