Satoshi Yoshiizumi of TAKT PROJECT, interviewed for a feature in the Design Magazine "AXIS" vol. 229, questions the current situation where "easy to understand" is undoubtedly the goal of design. He believes that it is important to go beyond "univocal design," which has only one meaning determined by the creator, to "multivocal design," in which multiple meanings are created, and he focused on the term "middle voice," which is neither active nor passive. The book that led to this was "The World of the Middle Voice: An Archaeology of Will and Responsibility" by Koichiro Kokubun, a professor at the University of Tokyo. This work, which was published in 2017 and won the Hideo Kobayashi Award, is a masterpiece that writes that even non-specialized readers can understand the concept of "middle voice," which is not very familiar to Japanese people. Through dialogue between the two, this year's CONNECT aims to create an interactive exchange between design and philosophy. By understanding the issues and awareness of the problems facing design from the perspective of philosophy, new horizons may emerge. We're looking forward to your visit.
