Design to keep

Attempts to reduce waste and realize a recycling-based society with low environmental impact are accelerating throughout the world. Nevertheless, as many complex problems intertwine, many people feel there is a limit to what any given individual can do. In this issue, while reflecting on the history related to waste, we investigate the endeavors of entrepreneurs and designers who have stood up to solve this problem. We very much hope our findings here will be an encouragement in taking the next step.

Mestic, a new material produced from cattle manure saves livestock farmers

alila Essaïdi is director at BioArt Laboratories in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. A new material named Mestic developed from cattle manure by this lab for practical application in society is about to change even the livestock breeding system. The fact it is bringing up the topic of waste may be termed a social entrepreneurial spirit that does not merely stop at developing materials.

Mami Kataoka (Director at Mori Art Museum)

Mami Kataoka assumed the post of director at Mori Art Museum on January first of this year and has also been appointed as chairperson of the International Committee for Museums and Collections of Modern Art (CIMAM) for the next three years. CIMAM is an organization comprising museum heads and curators around the world, and it is the first time its top post has been assigned to person of Asian ancestry. Exerting her capacity especially regarding diversity is also being expected in this museum management post which has been assigned mostly to men.
